Giving Thanks, Canadian Style

Being a dual citizen has its perks – you can live/work/travel on either side of the border, carry two passports and feel like a real, live spy and adopt the not-so-attractive title of “dually”.  But, one of the cooler things about being a dual citizen is that you get an extra, “official” opportunity per year to partake in turkey and all the trimmings.  Canadian Thanksgiving is at the beginning of October, which is a little odd to get used to for sure.  But, any excuse to chow down on turkey dinner is fine with me!

Tracey and I went to Carol’s for dinner.  Carol’s mom, Margaret, was there as well.  I had never met her or even seen a picture of her before.  She was quite funny – very “tough love” and has the same birthday as my Granny Bush – December 14th.  Carol’s ex-sister-in-law and nephew were supposed to come to dinner as well but told Carol they weren’t coming when she called to see why they hadn’t yet arrived. How friggin’ rude!  Carol’s dinner turned out really well in spite of how everyone always rags her about how she’s a terrible cook.  We had the standard turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy fare with Brussels sprouts and carrots.  Carol bought a huge pumpkin pie from Costco and I made a Chocolate Dream Pie (a la my mom’s recipe) and brought that along.  We all pigged out and then watched some of the Bears/Packers game before heading home.

Having not gotten much sleep last night, when we got back here with full bellies and a glass of wine or so mixed in with dinner, I was sooooo sleepy.  We watched the rest of the Bears/Packers game (Bears won) and headed to bed at about 9:30pm.  I fell asleep quickly and woke up about midnight and couldn’t get back to sleep because I was too hot.

Backtracking a little…This morning we got up to watch the Saints game and I was NOT happy about being awake at 10am when I went to bed at 4:30am.  I made breakfast – yummy scrabbled eggs with green onions and mozzarella, beans, hashbrowns and toast *drool drool* and we watched the Saints fumble their way through another game which they ended up losing in spite of Carolina’s many blunders and tons of penalties.  The Panthers handed the Saints many a “here you go on a silver platter” opportunities and each and every time, the Saints threw it back and said “na, but thanks!”.  I’m disgusted by how shitty they’re playing so far this year – a perfect 0-4 losing record!  But, on the bright side, LSU is kicking major ass and is officially #1!  GEAUX TIGERS!

I’m doing some preliminary shopping for a different phone/PDA.  The iPAQ, for all my longing for it, has turned out to be a bit of a sloth.  It’s painfully slow to start and close programs and even ending a call takes a few seconds.  For anyone with a flip phone who knows, without a doubt, that when you close the phone, the call has ended, it’s easy to know why this can be a very bad thing!  No mis-haps thus far, but the device is, in general, very disappointing considering its super-high price tag.

On a closing note, I hate having some sort of sweet dessert in the fridge, particularly one I don’t have often.  I told Frank it’s like the green crystal in Superman – it calls to me.  UGH.  Oh, well.  I guess allowing myself a couple of days a year of true gluttony isn’t something I should feel TOO bad about.  With that, I’m off to hit the fridge for another sliver of my Chocolate Dream…lol
